Digital Storytelling 2.0 with DEstreaming Resrouces
  • should be woven into all curriculum areas
  • can be constructed from as little as one image to a full-blown production
  • DE Resources
  • media sources: images, video, sound, music
  • use a video, remove the sound, have students narrate over the video to tell the story
  • integrate sound effects into the story or tell a story using the sound effects only
  • use the search term "afi" - selection of videos with teacher's guides related to the creation of digital story pieces

Critical Thinking - W & H Approach
  • What are we going to do before we start the lesson?
  • Where do the students come from?
    • Removing misconceptions from the concept.
    • Increases participation in the classroom.
    • This will reduce anxiety.
  • (Hook) How are we going to engage the students in the lesson?
  • How are we going to engage critical thinking skills?

W - I see...I know...I wonder: this is a strategy to use before a lesson and move into a KWL.
1/2 the Story - take a picture, cut it in half and use this as a way to engage discussion about what the students believe the lesson will be about.

Adjectives - cute, colorful, wild, awesome, bizarre, scary, mysterious, funny, wet: show a video or photo and have the students write as many adjectives that they can think of in 30 or 60 seconds.

Wordle - Insert an article, speech, passage from a book. Have them take 5 words, write a paragraph about the words and where they've heard them before.

Watch Talk - Show a video, no sound, then have the students talk about what was just seen - how it applies to the lesson, how using this "watch & talk" can help to remove misconceptions about content.

H Strategies - The Hook
Reaction to an audio file - I'm walking through a rain forest or some kind of forest. Birds are all around me talking to each other because I'm trespassing on their turf. A stream or brook is in the background as I can hear the movement of water.

Quick Write - to get students engaged.

3 Truths and 1 Lie - Show a video and then post 4 items for a class to determine the 3 facts from the one lie. This hook can also help take away misconceptions about the topic.

Blabberize - Write a script that talks to the class and captures their attention throughout the lesson.

The ultimate goal of WH is to create a "W" digital activity that will enable you to assess and build background knowledge. Create an "H" activity that will capture and hold students' interest.

Project Based Learning
Utilize Classroom Manager to: Organize, Assign and Differentiate

Just like adding to "My Content" you can:
  • Create sub groups/classes to differentiate learning
  • Assign games, videos, writing prompts, etc. to classes or individuals.

Combine DEstreaming with your Google Apps, wiki, etc.
These components can be used for:
  • student groups to house their research
  • embed group calendars
  • embed individual and group responsibilities charts and maps
  • use the discussion feature for asynchronous communication
  • publish their solutions
